Can someone from Confluent explain how the MongoDB Atlas Connectors relate to the standard Mongo connector?

I’d like to know more about how closely tied the Atlas connector is to Mongo. Is it just built on top and thus released after the Mongo folks release patches to their code or 100% separate codebase?
