Yes. Because Kafka relies on Zookeeper for these functionalities:

Server failure detection.
Maintaining topics and ACLs.
Persisting ISR sets, etc.

We’re getting close to get rid of Zookeeper :smiley:
Kafka v2.8 looks to be the first version with access to “pure kafka”
